Who We Are
S.M.I.L.E. is a national Community based education organisation, NGO, Section 21 Company, Public Benefit Organisation working in partnership with Independent and Community Primary and High schools throughout South Africa.
What We Do
We do many things at S.M.I.L.E., all focused on equipping teachers with the best tools possible to ensure they succeed at teaching English.
Where We’re From
Although we provide our products and skills across the length and breadth of South Africa, we are based on the grounds of St. Mary’s School in Kloof, Durban.
We are extremely excited about the inclusion of the new prescribed poetry that is included in the Updated Grade 10, 11 and 12 Learner’s Books. It means this book is relevant to learning the poem and getting familiar with it as well as questions that are similar to those found in NSC.
The activities are excellent. I have used them as a way to start the study of the poems as the questions go from basic to more difficult. The illustrations and colour are so attractive and this makes the lessons more enjoyable. I have found the same in the Updated Grade 11 and Grade 10 for poetry. I really like what you have done for poetry.
These activities in the Grade 12 Home Language Textbook are highly relevant and helpful. They offer meaningful preparation for exams and mirror the structure and focus of formal assessment tasks.
I absolutely love all the Paper 1 and Paper 3 work. It is beautifully integrated to cover all the aspects of language AND writing in an interesting and thorough manner. The language and writing exercises complement one another and engage in terms of subject matter
The Teacher Guide is well developed. It breaks down the questions sufficiently in order for learners to benefit from their corrections and makes useful study for their examinations.
I feel blessed to be able to offer our Matrics an attractive colourful, fun, serious and thought provoking book.
The Updated Grade 12 English Home Language Textbook is genuinely beneficial for learners. It provides detailed and easy to understand information and allows learners to critically analyse text for both language and literature.

We have formed part of SMILE’s Piloting Programme and all our grades are currently using the textbooks. We are really impressed with your books and the learners can relate to the content within the books. We really would like to thank you for making our English lessons more fun. It is wonderful that the Grade 12 textbooks include the prescribed literature and we look forward to it. We would love to join SMILE’s Updated Programmes for Grade 12 and Grade 9 English FAL for 2026. We believe the updated versions will be just as impressive.
We are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to use these textbooks. Our learners are being elevated as language learners and credit goes to the team that compiles these textbooks.
The layout of the SMILE textbooks is superb. The learners respond well to the size of the text/font and colour of images. The level is appropriate for English Home Language even though many of our learners are second or even third English language speakers. The SMILE textbooks are a pleasure to use.
We are so grateful that we have been given the opportunity to use your amazing textbooks. Your books use such relatable examples for the modern teenager. The Grade 8 learners love them and the teachers do as well!
